Who buys mining claims?

Short answer: most buyers fall into a few groups: exploration companies, operating mining companies, small miners and prospectors, and resellers who buy claims to sell on. Each looks for something different and pays in a different way, so the right buyer depends on what your claims are and what you want from the sale.

Exploration companies

Companies that acquire claims, explore them and, if results support it, take them toward a technical report or a mine. They look for geology and records, often prefer options or royalty structures, and may buy several neighbouring claims to control a whole target. Triple 8 is in this group.

Operating mining companies

Larger producers usually buy whole districts or advanced projects with drilling and studies. A single claim or a small group rarely fits, unless it sits next to ground they already hold.

Small miners and prospectors

Individuals and small operators who want ground they can work themselves, often placer gold. They tend to pay cash and move quickly, and they care about access and whether gold has been recovered there before.

Resellers and listing sites

Some buyers acquire claims to resell, often to recreational prospectors, and some websites list claims for sale on the owner’s behalf. That can be a simple way to sell, but the price usually reflects the reseller’s margin.

Questions that apply to every buyer

Who exactly is buying, how is the price set, when is money paid, what happens to the claims if the buyer stops paying the fees, and does your own attorney review the agreement? If an offer seems unusually large or unusually urgent, see our guide Is this offer real?
